Screw Pile Installation Methods

Installing screw pile foundations yourself or with the help of installers can be done manually or with specialized equipment. The choice of method depends on the construction budget, soil type, and terrain features on the construction site, the presence of buildings, and the condition of access roads.

Manual Pile Installation

This method is most often used when access to the construction site is not possible or the planned work is small. If 8-12 small-diameter piles need to be installed, there is no need to bring a screw-in rig to the site. Three people can complete this job in one workday—two screw in the support, and the third checks the verticality of the pile to prevent it from drifting. The manual method is used when a new foundation needs to be built adjacent to an existing one:

  • building a bathhouse, greenhouse, or garage next to a house or fence;
  • replacing a damaged concrete foundation with a pile foundation;
  • building an extension to a house.

Mechanized Pile Installation

Mechanized installation of screw piles is used when constructing foundations for heavy buildings. A helical piles machine can screw large-diameter pile supports into dense, hard soil.

This installation method ensures precise installation of the supports to the required depth with minimal vertical deviations.

Advantages of Screw Pile Foundations

  • Reliability. Pile structures are securely anchored in the soil, ensuring foundation stability in difficult construction areas. A house with a pile foundation will last a long time without the need for replacement or repair.
  • Safety. Pile foundations do not crack like concrete and are resistant to seasonal temperature and humidity fluctuations, as well as frost heaving.
  • Quick installation. Construction of a pile foundation takes 1-2 days. The foundation can be loaded immediately after the grillage is laid or the framing is installed.
  • Suitable for all seasons. Pile foundations can be built at temperatures down to -10°C in any weather.
  • High load-bearing capacity. A wide range of sizes allows you to select screw rods with the required characteristics for the construction of all types of structures—from fences and gazebos to heavy brick and concrete structures.
  • Long service life. The minimum service life of pile foundations is 80 years.

Disadvantages of pile foundations

  • Poor thermal insulation. The open subfloor space is prone to drafts and freezing. To reduce heat loss, adequate floor insulation is necessary.
  • Susceptibility to corrosion. Since the metal is susceptible to electrochemical corrosion, it is better to choose piles with a galvanized or two-component coating.
  • No basement. When building a house on a pile-screw foundation, it is impossible to install a basement, an underground garage, or a ground floor.
